Christina Kent Early Childhood Center

Melvin is a single dad who came to Christina Kent Early Childhood Center 10 months ago needing childcare for his daughter Naiwah, who is diagnosed with autism. Melvin had called 26 different childcare programs and personally visited 12 of them and none were willing to enroll his daughter.  Melvin had been homeless and lost his own business due to a family situation. After we accepted Naiwah into CKECC, he was able to get an apartment, enroll into CNM and go to his classes regularly. Naiwah has been accepted into our Center and by her peers.

On the day of the preschool graduation, the entire preschool class of 5 year olds chanted Naiwah’s name, unsolicited, as she walked down the aisle to get her diploma. That is full inclusion. Naiwah is now in kindergarten and Melvin called to tell me that he is graduating from CNM this semester with his business license and he will be reopening his painting business. He thanked us immensely for accepting, caring for and keeping his daughter safe so he could go to school and support his family as a single father.

Christina Kent Early Childhood Center (CKECC, CK) is a well-established nonprofit, founded in 1919 by the Woman’s Club of Albuquerque. Christina Kent is the oldest, continuously operating childcare center in the Albuquerque area and has been in operation for 90 years.

The mission of Christina Kent Early Childhood Center is to serve the children of low-income working families with quality childcare, early education and nutritional services in a safe and nurturing environment.

CKECC offers high quality child care and educational curriculum to children ages 2-5 from low-income working families.  CKECC has a five star license with the State of New Mexico, the highest status a program can have; and was recently re-accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

There are 65 children enrolled in the Center, with a waiting list of over 85 families who are hoping to find affordable, quality childcare.  In these uncertain economic times, it is more important than ever for children to have a safe and nurturing childcare environment that parents can afford when they are being forced to change or lose employment.

CKECC is located in downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico.  The demand for low cost childcare is high.  Families at the Center have additional challenges because 50% are single mothers, fathers or grandparents. Single parents do not have the option of staying home with their children during the most critical time in their child’s development. CKECC provides parents with affordable quality child care. CKECC provides a vital service which enables these parents to work and become financially self sufficient in the community.

Christina Kent is in the process of strategic planning for a new building. Our building is over 100 years old and is in need of a lot of repairs. As part of our strategic plan, we are seeking alumni who attended our program throughout the last 90 years. If you would like to share your story, please call Sandy Salm, Board President at 505-293-9643.  We would love to hear from you!

If you are looking to volunteer, we are in need of a dance/ movement/ drama teacher and also someone to assist with grant research as we begin plans for a new building.

Christina Kent thanks the community for all of the ongoing support you provide.
