Our target population is low income, disadvantaged, at-risk youth and adults 16 and over. Our people are predominantly Hispanic. Sixty-three percent are female. Forty-two percent of students are single parents. This applies to both genders.
Many of our students are TANF recipients. We provide opportunities for work-related experience to these women.
The New Mexico Department of Higher Education explains that our technology-driven economy makes ongoing adult education mandatory for self sufficiency. NMHED estimates the unmet need for Adult Basic Education at 22% of the general population. The population of the City of Albuquerque is about 450,000, according to US Census data as reported by infoplease.com and areaconnect.com. Our service are comprises about one sixth the total area of Albuquerque. My estimate for the needs of neighborhoods we serve is 16,500 people (22% of 75,000).
Our parent organization, SER De New Mexico, is concentrating on senior services. This divergence in mission has prompted an amicable split. We are forming our own 501(c)(3).
