Mission Statement:
Albuquerque Reads believes that all children have a right to literacy and that literacy is the foundation of lifelong learning and active participation in the social, economic and political institutions of the community. Literacy is essential if Albuquerque is to grow and prosper.
Programs:
Presently Albuquerque Reads is a program offered in 3 of the 20 Title 1 schools in Albuquerque. Albuquerque Reads is in partnership with the Albuquerque Public Schools and is dedicated to insuring that all kindergarten students who participate will enter first grade at or above reading level.
To accomplish this, Albuquerque Reads relies on volunteer tutors who are trained to work one on one with these students. These tutoring sessions take place 3 times a week. Typically, a tutor devotes 70 minutes a week during which time he/she tutors two kindergarten students using state-of the art curriculum. There are over 200 children in this program and over 500 tutor volunteers.
Albuquerque Reads is under the fiscal umbrella of the Career Guidance Institute and is sponsored by the Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce.
