Is your strategic plan too long, outdated, ineffective in driving outcomes? Join us to create a dynamic plan that will move your nonprofit’s board members and staff forward in meeting its goals. 

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the key components of a strategic plan
  • Develop a 1-2 page strategic plan divided into quarterly priorities
  • Determine the execution rhythm of your strategic plan
  • Be able to present the plan to fellow board members and staff to generate consensus


Strategic planning and execution are the result of a collaborative effort between a board of directors and agency leadership. Too often, however, a strategic plan is lengthy and consists of many goals, while lacking clear accountability structures including who is doing what and by when. The completion of a concise one to two-page strategic plan must be accompanied by a method of completing the tactical components that result in the intended outcomes. The objectives of this training are to: (1) describe the distinct and required sections of a strategic plan, (2) translate a strategic plan into measurable goals, (3) identify tactics and actions that move an organization towards its goals, and (4) develop an accountability structure that connects people to behaviors to an actualized future state.


Intermediate to Advanced


Members of nonprofit boards, executive directors, senior-level staff, and anyone who is responsible for guiding teams in an impact organization.


Ben Thomson, MA, HHP,  works with leaders and their teams to build trusting partnerships, solve complex problems, and implement scalable projects. He has successfully coached and consulted with business leaders locally, nationally and intermationally to help them focus on their highest-level results and align teams around a clearly defined, actionable vision. Born in Scotland, he moved to California in his teen years and earned his master's degree in Developmental Psychology. He finds New Mexico to be a special place and now calls Santa Fe home -- where he serves as a consultant, leadership coach, trainer, author, volunteer, and martial arts instructor.

Board Development and Leadership

  • Boards of Directors should be actively involved in the organization’s strategic planning.

  • Boards of Directors should organize Board subcommittees to effectively address the organization’s strategies and goals.

  • Nonprofit leaders should develop both annual and multi-year strategic plans in order to regularly assess the changing environment and create a roadmap to steer the organization through changes.
