Effectively utilizing a variety of communication tactics can increase your organization’s brand awareness, support grassroot volunteer efforts, and lead to more successful advocacy efforts.

Key objectives for this session:

  • Review primary advocacy communication plan objectives, including developing a compelling message, building key partnerships/collaborations, and understanding how success is measured.
  • Create an understanding of communications tactics that are best suited to advocacy efforts, including building media relationships, writing news releases, utilizing social media, creating email action alerts, and more.
  • Develop an implementation timeline for advocacy communications tactics.
  • Review spokesperson strategies and allow attendees to develop talking points (as time allows).

 Presenters:  Suzanne Lawson is Owner & Chief Consultant of SL Consulting, a nonprofit management firm focusing on marketing and communications, strategic fundraising support, special event management, strategic management, and volunteer engagement strategies. She is also a Principal Consultant with Constellation Consulting, LLC. SL Consulting’s projects include managing national and statewide events; providing fundraising training for staff and boards; initiating new organization branding; creating and implementing organization marketing campaigns; and more. Suzanne has a proven success record and has earned local and national recognition for her efforts. She serves on the Association of Fundraising Professionals’ Board of Directors, and is a volunteer with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network. She is a Certified Fund Raising Executive, a Fellow of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and holds an MBA with Marketing Concentration from UNM.

Erin Marshall is Principal Consultant for Constellation Consulting, LLC, a cooperative of consultants in New Mexico with a wide range of skills and experience in public health, nonprofit management, advocacy/policy, data evaluation, racial justice, mental health, and more. Erin is an anthropologist who assists clients in identifying priorities and reaching their full potential while establishing their niche within the convergence of health, environment, education, and food policy. Erin has provided executive services and management to numerous nonprofits and is involved with myriad nonprofit issue advocacy organizations to further public policy in support of healthy places to live, work, and play. She founded two nonprofits to support healthy environments and improve infant care. Erin is committed to supporting the good health and quality of life for New Mexicans, especially our children. Erin is a Juris Doctorate 2021 Candidate at the University of New Mexico School of Law with the Child and Family Justice Scholarship.
