Rebuilding Together - Sandoval County
Our mission is to prevent homelessness in Sandoval County by partnering with the community to rehabilitate the homes of elderly, disabled, and low-income residents so that they may continue to live in warmth, safety, and independence.
Our organization rehabilitates homes for low-income elderly, disabled, and families at no cost to the homeowner. We provide safety and access improvements for the elderly and disabled. We repair leaky roofs, leaky plumbing, unsafe electrical, hazardous and unhealthy floor coverings, and many other common household maintenance problems. We build ramps and widen doorways for ease of access to and within the home. We repair and paint exterior surfaces to prolong the life of the dwelling.
An example of the help homeowners receive from our program is the case of Jane Smith (not her real name). Jane was suffering from a terminal illness and was cared for by her son, who had quit his job to care for his mother, and her 11 year old grandson. Jane, her son, and her grandson lived on Jane's social security income of less that $1,000. Jane owned a home in Rio Rancho in an area prone to poly-butalyne pipe problems. The plumbing in the home began leaking under the foundation and the water bills were so high the family had to cut off the water to the home. The family had been hauling water from a neighbor's home in 5 gallon containers for 3 months when they found our non-profit. We paid for a complete re-pipe of the home and Jane was again able to bathe and be more comfortable while she dealt with her illness.
