Mission Statement:

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Primary Programs:

Special Olympics New Mexico offers training and competition in 12 sports - bowling, basketball, poly hockey, unified flag football, track & field, unified volleyball, bocce, unified softball, rhythmic gymnastics, aquatics, golf, and equestrian.
Special Olympics Project UNIFY is a school-based program that uses sports and leadership programs to activate young people in developing school communities where all youth are agents of change – fostering respect, dignity and advocacy for people with Intellectual disabilities. Schools participate in three components of Project UNIFY: Inclusive Sports, Youth Leadership, and Whole School Engagement.

Our Unified Sports program brings together Special Olympics athletes and individuals without intellectual disabilities to train and compete on the same team. Unified Sports enables athletes to learn new sports, develop higher-level sports skills, and experience meaningful inclusion as each athlete is ensured of playing a valued role on the team.

Other Programs:

SONM also offers an Athlete Leadership Program, which trains Special Olympics athletes to assume leadership positions within the organization.
Working with volunteer health professionals across New Mexico at two of its seven State Competitions, SONM offers a Healthy Athletes Program to its participants. Athletes receive free health screenings by physical therapists, dentists and hygienists, audiologists, optometrists, and podiatrists.
