Description of the Volunteer Opportunity: 

ReadWest is currently seeking individuals with nonprofit Board of Directors experience. Fundraising and leadership experience is a plus. Please contact ReadWest at 505-892-1131 or email [email protected] to begin the interview process.

According to a national study, low-literacy adults who participated in Adult Literacy Programs experienced an overall 53% economic gain. Low-literacy adults who did not participate experienced a 2% drop in income. Help us break the cycle of poverty by offering literacy instruction to adults.

ReadWest is a nonprofit agency providing FREE adult literacy services to the west side Albuquerque/Rio Rancho area adults since 1989. ReadWest trains and supports volunteer tutors to teach adults one-to-one in basic reading, writing and English as a Second Language skills.

ReadWest clients are adults who are: 1. Native English speakers who read at a 5th-grade level or below; 2. High school dropouts who need to prepare for the GED, but are intimidated by college campus prep classes; 3. Speak other languages and need English to function in the community; 4. Understand and speak English well enough to be understood, but are not literate in reading and writing.

Additional Requirements: 

Board of Directors experience is a bonus. Directors meet every third Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. unless otherwise scheduled. The ReadWest Board service period is 3 years.
