Respite Volunteer

Description of the Volunteer Opportunity: 

We will train and support volunteers to be prepared to offer Respite Care to families who care for a member in their home who suffers from Dementia. Mature people of any age may apply. You will learn about what is dementia, skillful behaviors for being with people who have dementia, including some creative modalities such as music, collage, theatre.

After training, volunteers will be supported by our staff when there are questions or concerns. You will help one person at a time, giving their primary caregiver(s) a chance to go out of the house. You will be keeping a 'friend' with dementia safely engaged and comfortable for a few hours, usually in their own home, but also out.

Additional Requirements: 

This is for anyone who wants to help others, and to better understand what Dementia is and how to cope with it. Young adults pursuing health care fields, retired people, creatives who want to help someone for whom behavioral spontaneity or absorption in activities can stimulate pleasure and connection. Anyone who feels curious and kind can be equipped to be a 'friend' to someone who has Dementia.
