Getting It Right: IRS Form 990

Are you filling out your 990 correctly?  Are you using it to highlight the organization's work and effective management?  The IRS Form 990 has become more important as it is scrutinized by IRS, grantors, donors, the media and competitors.  Filing correctly is critical to ensure the nonprofit organization is properly presented to the public.

Learning Objectives
- review the major components of the IRS Form 990 and how to correctly present your organization's information
- understand how key areas of the IRS Form 990 will help you present your organization in a positive light to IRS and your grantors

After this class, you will be familiar with:
- tax compliance and governance sections of the tax return
- the reporting of exempt revenue and special events
- importance of correctly classifying costs
- how to properly report compensation
- how to identify unrelated business income
- lobbying expenses and their effect on your tax exempt status
- common mistakes made on the IRS Form 990

For managers of mid-size or large nonprofit organizations.  The training will be particularly helpful to Executive Directors and Finance Directors who are responsible for the IRS Form 990.  

Presenter
Janice Moen, CPA, has seventeen years’ experience as the CEO or CFO of nonprofit organizations and five years’ experience as an external auditor of governmental and nonprofit agencies.  Janice is a faculty member of the University of New Mexico, Anderson School of Business.  She developed a graduate level class on nonprofit accounting and the IRS Form 990.  Janice has a BBA and a Master in Accounting from the University of New Mexico.
